Saturday Selah: The Ordinary Places
Scripture: Psalm 90:17 NIV
“May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.”
There are weeks when God’s presence seems unmistakable.
A prayer is answered.
A door opens.
Something shifts in a way we could never have arranged ourselves.
And then there are weeks when God meets us somewhere much less dramatic.
In the kitchen.
At work.
During a conversation.
While caring for someone.
While completing another responsibility.
While making a decision no one else will ever know about.
This week reminded us that faithfulness is often lived in ordinary places.
Looking Back
We began the week remembering that we are more than what we produce. Our worth cannot be measured by how much we accomplish, how busy we remain, or how impressive our results appear. We can work faithfully while remembering that our lives ultimately belong to God.
Then we considered how God is present in the ordinary. There does not have to be a dividing line between the “spiritual” parts of life and everything else. Washing dishes, driving to work, answering an email, preparing dinner, caring for family, or completing another routine task can become an offering when it is done with God in mind.
Wednesday invited us to look at what God has already placed in our hands. Instead of constantly focusing on what we do not have, we were challenged to consider how faithfully we are stewarding what we have been given—our gifts, time, resources, relationships, responsibilities, and opportunities.
Thursday reminded us of the ministry of showing up. Faithfulness sometimes looks like presence. Staying. Listening. Helping. Encouraging. Offering hospitality. Meeting a need. Choosing not to disappear simply because showing up has become inconvenient.
And yesterday, we remembered that small obedience still counts. We do not always know what God may build through one small act of faithfulness. Something that appears insignificant to us may be part of something much larger in His hands.
That brings us here.
To the ordinary places.
Where Did God Meet You?
Before moving into another week, look back over the one you have just lived.
Where did God meet you?
Perhaps it was not in a sanctuary or during some extraordinary spiritual moment.
Maybe He met you in a responsibility you wanted to avoid but completed faithfully anyway.
Maybe He met you in a conversation where you chose patience instead of irritation.
Maybe He met you while caring for your home, your family, your work, or yourself.
Maybe He met you when you used something He had already given you instead of focusing on what you still wished you had.
Maybe He met you when you showed up for someone.
Maybe He met you in one quiet act of obedience that nobody else noticed.
God is not limited to extraordinary moments.
He is present in the ordinary ones too.
The Work of Our Hands
Psalm 90:17 asks God to establish the work of our hands.
That prayer gives dignity to ordinary work.
It reminds us that what passes through our hands can become something God uses.
The meal prepared.
The phone call made.
The child cared for.
The assignment completed.
The kindness offered.
The bill paid.
The encouragement given.
The apology made.
The boundary honored.
The small promise kept.
We may look at these moments and see nothing particularly remarkable.
God may see faithfulness.
And perhaps that is one of the lessons of this entire week:
Ordinary does not mean insignificant.
When our lives are surrendered to God, even ordinary moments can become places where faith is practiced, love is demonstrated, character is formed, and obedience takes root.
Saturday Selah
Today, do not rush immediately into what comes next.
Look back.
Where did you practice faithfulness this week?
Where did you recognize God in something ordinary?
Which responsibility required more grace than anyone knew?
Who needed you to simply show up?
What did you faithfully steward?
What small decision reflected what you say you believe?
And where might God be inviting you to see your everyday life differently?
You do not have to wait for a dramatic moment to experience God.
Look again.
He may already be meeting you in the ordinary places.
Selah Reflection
Take a few quiet moments today and name five ordinary places where God met you this week.
Then pray over the coming week:
Lord, let Your favor rest upon my life. Establish the work of my hands. Help me recognize You not only in extraordinary moments, but in my responsibilities, relationships, routines, and small decisions. Teach me to live faithfully in the places that seem ordinary, trusting that nothing surrendered to You is insignificant. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
