Small Obedience Still Counts

Scripture: Zechariah 4:10 NLT

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin…”

We tend to notice the big things.

The breakthrough.
The promotion.
The finished project.
The answered prayer.
The testimony after everything finally comes together.

But God also sees the beginning.

He sees the first step.

He sees the small decision nobody else notices. He sees the prayer whispered when we barely have the words. He sees the apology. The phone call. The application submitted. The boundary honored. The dollar saved. The page written. The temptation resisted. The moment we choose obedience even though nothing around us seems to change.

And according to Zechariah 4:10, God does not despise those small beginnings.

He rejoices to see the work begin.

When Small Feels Insignificant

Sometimes we dismiss what we are doing because it does not seem important enough.

We tell ourselves:

It was only one thing.

I barely made any progress.

Nobody even noticed.

I should be farther along by now.

But faithfulness cannot always be measured by visible results.

Sometimes the most important question is not, “How much did I accomplish?”

It is simply:

“Did I obey God in the thing He placed before me today?”

Because small obedience is still obedience.

And obedience does not become more valuable to God simply because more people can see it.

God Knows What He Is Building

The people in Zechariah’s day were rebuilding the temple, and what they saw in front of them did not yet look impressive.

It was unfinished.

It was only a beginning.

But God could already see what the beginning would become.

We often cannot.

We see the single brick.

God sees the building.

We see the seed.

God sees what will grow from it.

We see one faithful decision made on an ordinary Friday.

God sees how that decision may shape our character, strengthen our faith, redirect our future, encourage someone else, or prepare us for something we do not yet know is coming.

That is why we cannot always judge the significance of our obedience by what we can see right now.

We do not know what God is building with it.

Faithfulness Before Results

There is a temptation to believe that obedience matters most when it produces the outcome we hoped for.

But faithfulness comes before results.

Sometimes we obey and immediately see the fruit.

Sometimes we obey for months or years before anything appears to change.

And sometimes we may never fully see what God did with the obedience we offered Him.

Still, we obey.

Not because the outcome is guaranteed to look the way we imagined.

Not because someone will applaud.

Not because the progress will always be obvious.

We obey because we trust the One who asked us to take the step.

That is faith in practice.

Do the Small Thing

Maybe today God is not asking you to do something dramatic.

Maybe He is asking you to do the small thing.

Make the call.

Keep the commitment.

Tell the truth.

Offer the kindness.

Finish the task.

Forgive again.

Pray one more time.

Begin.

There will always be voices telling us that small progress does not count.

But Zechariah reminds us that heaven measures beginnings differently.

God rejoices when His people begin the work He has placed in their hands.

So do not despise the small beginning.

Do not dismiss the quiet obedience.

Do not assume that because you cannot yet see what God is doing, nothing is happening.

You may be holding only one small piece of the story.

God already sees the whole thing.

And if today all you can offer Him is one faithful step, take it.

Small obedience still counts.

It still matters.

And God still sees it.

A Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I have dismissed small beginnings because they did not look impressive enough. Help me stop measuring faithfulness only by visible results. Teach me to trust that every act of obedience offered to You matters, even when I cannot see what You are building through it. Give me the courage to take the next faithful step, however small it may seem, and leave the results in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
