Saturday Selah: Stay Teachable
Scripture: Proverbs 19:20 ESV
“Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.”
There is a difference between knowing something and being teachable.
We can know Scripture. We can have experience. We can be intelligent, capable, prayerful, and thoughtful.
And still have something to learn.
That may be one of the quieter lessons of wisdom: maturity does not mean we reach a place where no one can teach us anymore. Maturity means we remain willing to learn.
Proverbs 19:20 tells us to listen and accept instruction because what we receive today can become wisdom we carry into tomorrow.
Sometimes God confirms that we chose well.
Sometimes He shows us something we could not see before.
Sometimes He reveals that the decision was right, but our approach needs work.
And sometimes He uses Scripture, another person, a changed circumstance, or the quiet conviction of the Holy Spirit to ask us to reconsider something.
The question is: Are we still willing to listen?
Selah
This week, we have talked about committing our work to God, leaving room for His direction, walking in integrity, practicing self-control, and recognizing the protection of healthy boundaries.
But wisdom requires more than understanding these things.
Wisdom is something we allow to change us.
That means staying open when God confirms us—and when He corrects us.
It means being willing to ask:
Lord, where have You been teaching me?
Where have I been receptive?
Where have I resisted?
Resistance is not always obvious.
Sometimes it sounds like, “I already know that.”
Sometimes it is dismissing wise counsel because we do not like who delivered it.
Sometimes it is knowing God is pressing on something but deciding we would rather not deal with it yet.
Not every opinion deserves authority in our lives. Discernment matters. But we also do not want to become so certain of ourselves that nothing God sends can reach us.
A teachable heart stays open.
Wisdom for Tomorrow
The end of Proverbs 19:20 gives us a reason to remain teachable: “that you may gain wisdom in the future.”
Some of what God is teaching us today is preparation for something we have not encountered yet.
A lesson learned now may shape a decision later.
A correction received now may keep us from repeating an old pattern.
A boundary established now may protect something God entrusts to us later.
We may not always understand why the lesson matters while we are learning it.
But God sees farther than we do.
So perhaps one of the wisest prayers we can pray is:
God, keep me teachable while You are teaching me.
Saturday Selah Reflection
As you look back over this week, sit quietly with these questions:
- Where has God been teaching me?
- Where have I been receptive?
- Where have I resisted?
- Is there something I need to reconsider, correct, release, or approach differently?
- What might God be teaching me now that I will need later?
Do not rush the answers.
Selah.
Give God room to show you what this week has been teaching you.
The willingness to keep learning is part of what makes us wise.
Prayer
Father, thank You for continuing to teach me. Keep my heart open to Your wisdom, correction, and direction. Show me where I have received what You are teaching and where I have resisted. Give me humility to listen, discernment to recognize Your voice, and courage to change when You show me something that needs to change. Teach me today what I will need for tomorrow. Keep me teachable. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Leona
