Looking Ahead at The Witness Journal: Faith When It Costs Something
Weekly Anchor: Luke 9:23 NIV
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
Following Jesus sounds beautiful when the road is comfortable.
It is easy to celebrate faith when obedience agrees with what we already want. It is easier to say yes to God when His direction does not interrupt our plans, challenge our desires, threaten our relationships, or require us to surrender something we would rather keep.
But sometimes faith costs something.
Jesus never hid that part.
He told those who wanted to follow Him that discipleship would involve denying themselves, taking up their cross daily, and following Him.
That word daily matters.
The cost of following Christ is not always one dramatic sacrifice. Often, it appears in ordinary decisions where we must choose between what feels easier and what we know is right.
Sometimes obedience means doing something inconvenient.
Sometimes it means saying no when every part of us wants to say yes.
Sometimes it means standing firm even when others disagree.
Sometimes it means releasing resentment when holding onto it feels justified.
And sometimes following God means accepting that obedience may disappoint someone we love.
When Faith Becomes Costly
Real discipleship eventually reaches the places where our preferences collide with God’s direction.
That is often where faith becomes visible.
Not because sacrifice earns God’s love. We are already loved.
But because obedience reveals whom we trust.
When we choose God’s way over our convenience, His truth over someone’s approval, His boundaries over our impulses, or His call to forgive over our desire to remain angry, we are saying with our lives:
Jesus, I trust You more than I trust what feels easiest right now.
That kind of faith can cost something.
But it can also change us.

The Question Before Us
Will we follow Jesus only when the road agrees with us?
Or will we trust Him enough to follow when obedience costs something?
Luke 9:23 reminds us that discipleship is not merely something we believe.
It is a road we choose to walk.
Daily.
And sometimes the clearest evidence of our faith is what we are willing to surrender in order to keep following Christ.
Lord, prepare us for the places where obedience may cost us something this week. Give us courage when doing right is difficult, wisdom when choices are complicated, restraint when we need to say no, humility when others disagree with us, and grace when forgiveness feels hard. Teach us to trust You more than our comfort, our preferences, or the approval of others. Help us take up our cross daily and follow You faithfully. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
