How Wise Living Reaches Beyond Us

Weekly Anchor: Proverbs 21:3 NIV

“To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.”

For the past several weeks, we have explored how wisdom shapes our relationship with God, the words we speak, the relationships we nurture, and the choices we make. This week, wisdom turns outward.

A wise life cannot remain completely self-focused.

God’s wisdom changes how we see the people around us. It influences how we respond to injustice, vulnerability, generosity, inequality, leadership, and the needs of our neighbors. It teaches us that faithfulness is not measured only by what we believe, but also by how those beliefs shape the way we treat others.

Proverbs 21:3 delivers a powerful truth: doing what is right and just matters deeply to God. Worship cannot be separated from the way we live. We cannot honor God with our words while ignoring the suffering, mistreatment, or needs of the people He created.

Wisdom that looks like love pays attention.

It notices the person whose voice is being dismissed. It recognizes vulnerability without exploiting it. It gives without making generosity a performance. It understands that pursuing justice is not separate from worship—it can be an expression of worship. It refuses to become so consumed with personal concerns that it no longer sees who is hurting nearby.

This does not mean that one person can respond to every need or solve every injustice. It means we remain willing to see, listen, speak, give, and act when God places something—or someone—within our reach.

This portion of our journey feels especially true to the Witness in The Witness Journal. A witness does more than observe. A witness tells the truth about what has been seen. A witness refuses to look away when truth, dignity, or justice requires a response.

This week, we will consider what happens when wisdom becomes visible through love.

Looking Ahead

This week invites us to ask more than, “Am I making wise choices for my life?”

It asks:

Does my wisdom make room for other people?

Does it protect dignity?

Does it recognize suffering?

Does it move me toward generosity?

Does it give me courage to speak?

Does it lead me to do what is right and just?

Wisdom is not only something we possess. It becomes something other people can experience through us.

When wisdom looks like love, it reaches beyond us—and becomes part of our witness.

Lord, give us wisdom that does not stop with our own lives. Open our eyes to those who are overlooked, our ears to those who are unheard, and our hearts to those who are hurting. Teach us when to speak, when to give, and when to act. May the way we treat others become an honest expression of our worship and a faithful witness to Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
