Looking Ahead at The Witness Journal: Wisdom in Our Choices-Faithful Decisions in Everyday Life

Weekly Anchor: Proverbs 16:9

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
— Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)

We make decisions every day.

Some are small enough that we barely notice them. What time we get up. What we spend. What we say. Whether we follow through. Whether we tell the whole truth. Whether we ask for help. Whether we stop when we know we should stop.

Others carry much more weight. Career decisions. Relationships. Finances. Family. Ministry. Health. Where we live. What we pursue. What we release.

And somewhere in the middle of all those decisions is a question many of us who love God eventually have to wrestle with:

What does trusting God look like when we still have decisions to make?

Trusting God does not mean that we stop thinking.

It does not mean that we stop planning.

It does not mean that every decision will suddenly become obvious or that God will hand us a detailed map showing exactly what happens next.

Wisdom does not eliminate planning, responsibility, discipline, or discernment.

Wisdom teaches us how to practice all of them with God.

Proverbs 16:9 gives us a beautiful picture of that relationship:

We plan our course.

God establishes our steps.

There is room for both.

Our responsibility and His sovereignty.

Our planning and His direction.

Our willingness to move and our willingness to be redirected.

That means wisdom is not found in refusing to make decisions because we are afraid of choosing incorrectly. Nor is wisdom found in racing ahead and asking God to approve whatever we have already decided.

Wisdom learns to walk with God through the decision.

When Faith Becomes Everyday Practice

Throughout August, we have been learning that biblical wisdom is more than knowing what Scripture says. It is allowing what we know about God to shape how we actually live.

This week brings that truth directly into our choices.

Because eventually, wisdom has to become visible.

It becomes visible in what we commit to God.

It becomes visible in how tightly we hold our plans.

It becomes visible in what we do when nobody is watching.

It becomes visible in whether we can tell ourselves no.

And it becomes visible in whether pride prevents us from receiving help, correction, or another perspective.

These may seem like separate issues, but they are deeply connected.

Our decisions reveal what is governing us.

And sometimes the greatest spiritual work happens not in the dramatic moments of life, but in the quiet choices nobody else ever sees.

As We Begin This Week

Perhaps the question for this week is not simply:

Am I making good decisions?

Maybe we need to ask something deeper:

Who is shaping the decisions I make?

Is it God?

Fear?

Pride?

Impulse?

Pressure?

Other people’s expectations?

Our own determination?

Or the wisdom God has been teaching us to recognize throughout this month?

We do not need to know everything that is coming.

We do not need perfect certainty before taking every step.

But we can become people who commit our work to God, plan with open hands, choose integrity, practice self-control, and remain humble enough to receive wisdom.

We can make the plan.

And we can trust God with the steps.

Prayer

Father, thank You for caring about every part of our lives, including the decisions we make each day. Teach us to seek You before determination takes over. Give us wisdom to plan responsibly and humility to release our plans when You redirect us. Strengthen our integrity when no one is watching. Help us practice self-control that protects what You have entrusted to us, and reveal the places where pride keeps us from receiving wisdom. We commit our work, our plans, our choices, and our steps to You. Lead us in the way You would have us go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This week, let wisdom become more than something we know. Let it become visible in the choices we make.

Leona
