The Week Ahead at The Witness Journal: Learning to Notice
November Theme: Gratitude — More Than a Season of Thanks
Week 1: Noticing What’s Already Here | November 1–7, 2026
Scripture: James 1:17 NIV
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
Gratitude — More Than a Season of Thanks
This morning, I woke up feeling as though I had truly received that extra hour of rest. And before I began thinking about everything waiting for me, I had a reason to say, “Thank You, God.”
It was something simple. An extra hour of sleep. But it was a blessing nonetheless.
And perhaps that is exactly where our conversation about gratitude should begin.
November is a month when gratitude often takes center stage. We gather with family and friends, reflect on our blessings, and intentionally acknowledge the things for which we are thankful. But what happens when the holiday passes, the decorations come down, and life returns to its ordinary routines?
Does our gratitude go with it?
God’s goodness is not confined to a holiday, a particular season, or even the circumstances we would describe as favorable. His goodness is constant, even when our circumstances are changing.
James reminds us that every good and perfect gift comes from above. But have we become so accustomed to receiving certain gifts that we no longer recognize them as gifts at all?
The ability to rest. A familiar voice. Food for today. A moment of peace. The opportunity to try again. Even the prayers God answered so long ago that we have forgotten we once prayed them.
Sometimes the very blessings we once celebrated become the ordinary things we overlook.
And sometimes we are so focused on what we are waiting for God to do next that we miss what He is already doing.
That doesn’t mean our desires, needs, or unanswered prayers are unimportant. Nor does gratitude require us to pretend that our difficult circumstances are somehow wonderful.
We can acknowledge disappointment and still recognize provision. We can experience sorrow and still receive comfort. We can be uncertain about tomorrow while giving thanks for the grace that has sustained us today.
Gratitude is not the denial of what is missing. It is the recognition of what God has already given.
Throughout November, we will explore gratitude beyond the familiar expressions of thanksgiving. We will consider how to recognize blessings, find reasons for gratitude in difficult seasons, express our appreciation, and carry a grateful heart forward long after the month has ended.
I also invite you to join me in a simple daily gratitude journaling practice throughout November. You’ll find the invitation at the end of today’s reflection.
But first, we must learn to notice.

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 — Daily Bread Is Still Provision
Matthew 6:11
Wednesday, November 4, 2026 — God in the Ordinary
Ecclesiastes 3:13
Thursday, November 5, 2026 — The Mercy Inside the Moment
Psalm 145:9
Friday, November 6, 2026 — Goodness That Followed You
Psalm 23:6
Saturday, November 7, 2026 — Saturday Selah
We will pause to revisit the week’s reflections and consider what we discovered when we intentionally looked for God’s goodness in our everyday lives.
A Reflection Before We Begin
What if we approached this week differently?
Instead of beginning each day by identifying everything that needs to be accomplished, everything that is missing, or everything we are waiting for, what if we first acknowledged something God has already provided?
Perhaps we would discover that our lives contain more evidence of His goodness than we have taken the time to recognize.
Perhaps our circumstances would not change immediately, but our awareness of God’s presence within them would.
And perhaps we would begin to understand that gratitude is not merely something we express when we receive a blessing.
It is a way of living that helps us recognize the Giver.
A Prayer for the Week
Heavenly Father, thank You for the blessings we recognize and the countless expressions of Your goodness that we have overlooked. Forgive us for the times we have become so focused on what we lack that we fail to appreciate what You have already provided.
Lord, help us develop hearts that are attentive to Your presence. Open our eyes to recognize Your provision in ordinary moments, Your mercy in difficult circumstances, and Your faithfulness throughout our lives.
Teach us to be grateful without becoming complacent, hopeful without overlooking today, and faithful even when we are still waiting for answers.
May our gratitude extend beyond a season of thanksgiving and become a daily expression of our relationship with You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Leona
30 Days of Gratitude
A Daily Practice of Noticing
This November, let’s do more than talk about gratitude. Let’s practice it together.
Morning — Begin with Thanks
Write down one thing you’re grateful for. It doesn’t have to be extraordinary. Simply recognize it and thank God.
Evening — Look Again
Revisit your morning entry. What other blessings did you notice throughout the day? Where did you recognize God’s goodness, provision, or mercy? Add those reflections to your journal.
At the End of the Month — Reflect
Look back over your entries. What have you learned about God’s faithfulness? Has your awareness of His goodness changed?
The goal isn’t simply to fill thirty pages. It’s to develop a heart that continues noticing God’s goodness long after November ends.
