Looking Ahead at The Witness Journal: His Presence Through What’s Next
Scripture: Joshua 1:9 NIV
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
When the Road Ahead Is Unclear
There is something comforting about knowing what comes next. We like having plans, understanding our options, and knowing that the steps we take will lead somewhere meaningful.
But life doesn’t always offer us that kind of certainty.
Sometimes change comes because we’ve chosen a new direction. Other times, change arrives without an invitation. A door closes unexpectedly. A relationship shifts. Our health changes. A responsibility ends. Something we counted on is no longer available, and suddenly we’re standing in unfamiliar territory, wondering what happens now.
Even when we believe God is leading us, uncertainty can be unsettling.
We may trust Him completely and still wish He would show us a little more of the road ahead.
Yet Scripture reminds us that God’s presence is not dependent upon our understanding of His plans.
Courage in the Midst of Change
When God spoke the words recorded in Joshua 1:9, Joshua was facing an enormous transition.
Moses, the leader who had guided the Israelites through the wilderness, had died. Joshua was now responsible for leading God’s people into the Promised Land. The journey ahead would involve unfamiliar territory, difficult decisions, opposition, and responsibilities unlike anything he had carried before.
Imagine standing in Joshua’s position.
The person who had led before you is gone. The responsibility now rests with you. The people are looking to you for direction, and there is no turning back to the way things used to be.
It would have been understandable for Joshua to feel uncertain.
But notice what God did not say.
He did not promise Joshua that the journey would be easy. He did not say that every decision would be obvious or that no challenges would arise.
Instead, God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous and reminded him of one enduring truth:
“The LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
That was the foundation for Joshua’s courage.
Not his own ability to anticipate every obstacle. Not the assurance that circumstances would always work in his favor. Not even his confidence that he could handle everything coming his way.
His courage could rest in the presence of God.
What Courage Really Looks Like
Sometimes we misunderstand courage.
We imagine courageous people as those who move forward without hesitation, who never question their decisions, or who remain strong regardless of what life brings.
But courage does not require the absence of fear.
Sometimes courage is taking the next step while admitting that we’re afraid.
Sometimes it means asking for help because we recognize that we cannot carry everything alone.
Sometimes it means beginning again after something we invested years in building has come to an end.
And sometimes courage looks remarkably quiet. It may be choosing to rest rather than forcing ourselves forward, accepting a delay we did not want, or trusting God enough to release a plan that no longer seems possible.
We may be tempted to believe that faith requires us to have everything figured out.
But faith invites us to trust the One who does.
We do not have to know everything about what comes next to know that God will be present when we get there.
His Presence Doesn’t Change With Our Circumstances
One of the most beautiful truths about God’s faithfulness is that His presence is not limited to seasons of stability.
He is with us when life feels secure, and He remains with us when everything familiar seems to be shifting.
He is present in the waiting room, during difficult conversations, at unexpected endings, and in the unfamiliar beginnings that follow.
His presence does not guarantee that we will avoid disappointment, grief, uncertainty, or hardship. But it means those experiences do not place us beyond His care.
And perhaps that is something we need to remember when life changes.
The same God who walked with us through yesterday is not absent from tomorrow.
We may be entering a chapter we never expected to write. We may be grieving what was while trying to embrace what could be. We may not even know what questions to ask yet.
Still, God remains.
We do not have to manufacture certainty to move forward in faith. We can acknowledge our questions, bring our fears honestly before Him, and trust that His presence is sufficient for the step directly in front of us.
The Week Ahead
As we enter this final week of October, we’re turning our attention toward change, uncertainty, courage, and the faithfulness of God through life’s transitions.
Together, we’ll reflect on what it means to move forward when the path is unclear, how to respond when our plans change, where courage comes from when we’re weary, and how to recognize God’s presence even when the future looks different from what we imagined.
Not every transition is something we celebrate. Some changes require grieving, adjusting, rebuilding, and learning to live with unanswered questions.
But through all of it, we can hold on to the promise God gave Joshua.
He goes with us.
We don’t have to rush through the uncertainty to prove our faith. We don’t have to pretend to be excited about every new beginning. And we certainly don’t have to carry the weight of tomorrow before it arrives.
We can trust God with what we know, what we don’t know, and everything we’re still learning to surrender.
As this new week begins, consider this:
What is changing in your life right now, and what would it look like to face that change believing that God is already present in what comes next?
Perhaps the next step is not about finding the courage to face an entire unknown future.
Perhaps it is simply about trusting God enough to take one faithful step today.

A Prayer for the Week Ahead
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the constant presence in our changing lives. You know the roads ahead of us, including the turns we cannot see and the challenges we have yet to face.
Lord, some of us are entering new beginnings with excitement, while others are facing changes we never wanted. Some of us are standing between what was and what will be, uncertain about where to go or what to do next.
Remind us that we do not walk alone.
Give us courage when fear makes us hesitant, wisdom when decisions are difficult, patience when answers are delayed, and peace when the future feels uncertain.
Help us release the need to understand everything before we trust You. Teach us to recognize Your presence in the waiting, the transitions, and the unfamiliar places.
When we look toward tomorrow, let us remember that the God who carried us yesterday is the same God who walks beside us today and will remain with us through whatever comes next.
We place this week, our plans, our questions, and our futures in Your faithful hands.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Leona
