The Blessings We’ve Stopped Seeing
Scripture: Psalm 103:2 NIV
“Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—”
Have you ever stopped to consider that something you barely notice today may have once been the very thing you earnestly prayed for?
Perhaps it was a job, a home, restored health, financial stability, or simply the opportunity to begin again. You remember how desperately you needed God to intervene. You remember the prayers, the waiting, the uncertainty, and the overwhelming gratitude you felt when He provided.
But then life continued.
What was once an extraordinary blessing gradually became part of your ordinary routine. And somewhere along the way, without even realizing it, you stopped noticing what God had done.
The blessing didn’t disappear. Our awareness of it did.
As we grow and mature in our faith, we experience God working in new ways. We face new challenges, develop a deeper understanding of His character, and learn to trust Him through circumstances we might once have thought impossible to endure.
But spiritual growth doesn’t mean that yesterday’s miracles become any less miraculous.
The blessing God provided ten years ago is still a blessing today. Its significance doesn’t diminish simply because we’ve moved beyond the circumstances that made it necessary.
Yet sometimes, particularly during seasons of transition, our immediate needs can become so overwhelming that we struggle to see beyond them.
We’re standing in the hallway, waiting for another door to open. We’re praying for direction, provision, healing, or an answer that hasn’t yet arrived.
And while we’re concentrating on what we still need God to do, we can unintentionally overlook everything He’s already done.
That’s why David’s words in Psalm 103:2 are so important. He reminds his own soul not to forget God’s benefits.
He understood the importance of remembering.
And perhaps remembering is one of the most meaningful ways we practice gratitude.
The Blessings That Seem Small
I’ve discovered something about my own relationship with God. When I’m facing something enormous, I don’t generally question whether God will provide what I need. I’ve seen Him work through enough difficult circumstances to trust His faithfulness.
But sometimes it’s the little things that catch me off guard.
I remember one day when I was experiencing considerable pain and having an extremely difficult time walking. As I approached my destination, I prayed that an accessible parking space would be available.
It wasn’t.
I remember how discouraged I felt. I was hurting, and the thought of having to walk farther was overwhelming.
But I drove around again.
And as I approached, a car was pulling out of the space I had hoped would be available.
My immediate response was gratitude.
“Thank You, God. You did that for me!”
Someone else might have seen nothing more than an ordinary parking space becoming available. But I saw something different.
I saw God’s care in a moment when I desperately needed it.
And I was reminded that sometimes I need to slow down, exercise a little patience, and give myself room to recognize what God is doing.
That moment has stayed with me.
Not because it was the biggest blessing I’ve ever received, but because it was exactly what I needed when I needed it.
And isn’t that worth remembering?
Remembering What Still Matters
We sometimes associate God’s blessings with major accomplishments, extraordinary breakthroughs, or life-changing events.
But His goodness is not limited to the spectacular.
Sometimes it appears in an unexpected kindness, a moment of rest, a safe arrival, an encouraging word, or a parking space when walking another hundred feet feels impossible.
The size of a blessing does not determine its significance.
And the passage of time does not erase its value.
When we remember how God has provided in the past, we aren’t simply revisiting pleasant memories. We’re strengthening our awareness of His faithfulness in the present.
That doesn’t mean today’s difficulties become less real. Nor does it mean every prayer will be answered in the way or within the timeframe we expect.
It means we can face today’s uncertainty without forgetting the God who has been faithful throughout our journey.
We don’t have to make an elaborate list to practice remembering, although writing things down may be helpful. Sometimes all it takes is a quiet moment to reflect on where we’ve been, what we’ve endured, what we’ve received, and how God’s presence has sustained us.
And sometimes remembering one small blessing opens our eyes to dozens of others.
As we continue this month of gratitude, perhaps our greatest opportunity isn’t simply to discover new reasons to be thankful.
Perhaps it’s to recognize the blessings that have been right in front of us all along.
Yesterday’s answered prayer is still today’s reason to praise God.
Reflection
Think about something in your life today that you once prayed earnestly to receive.
When was the last time you thanked God for it?
Has familiarity caused you to overlook its significance?
And as you wait for God to move in your present circumstances, how might remembering His past faithfulness change the way you experience this season?
Remember, spiritual growth doesn’t require us to leave yesterday’s blessings behind. It gives us an opportunity to appreciate them with an even deeper understanding of God’s goodness.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for every blessing You have placed in my life, including those I have grown so accustomed to receiving that I sometimes fail to recognize them. Forgive me for the times when my attention becomes so focused on what I still need that I overlook everything You have already provided.
Lord, help me remember. Remind me of the prayers You have answered, the needs You have met, the circumstances You have brought me through, and the countless moments when Your goodness appeared in ways both extraordinary and ordinary.
Teach me to appreciate the small blessings with the same gratitude I express for the great ones. And when I find myself waiting for something new, help me exercise patience, trusting that You are present even when I cannot yet see what You are doing.
May I never become so familiar with Your goodness that I stop recognizing Your hand in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
