When Plans Are Interrupted
Scripture: Proverbs 16:9 NIV
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.”
We make plans. We organize schedules, establish priorities, set appointments, and anticipate how our days will unfold. Sometimes we have everything mapped out, right down to the smallest detail. And then something unexpected happens.
The car won’t start. An appointment gets canceled. Someone needs our help. An unexpected phone call changes everything. Suddenly, the day we carefully planned looks nothing like the one we’re living.
And sometimes, that is all it takes to unsettle our peace.
Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that although we make plans, God establishes our steps. This doesn’t mean planning is unnecessary or that every disruption is a divine assignment. It means our plans are not the ultimate authority over our lives. God remains present and faithful even when circumstances change.
The interruption may change our schedule, but it does not change God’s presence.
One of the challenges of learning to abide in Christ is recognizing that our connection with Him isn’t limited to the quiet moments we intentionally set aside. We can remain connected to Him in the middle of an unexpected delay, a difficult conversation, or a situation that requires us to rearrange everything.
But that connection requires attentiveness.
When something interrupts our plans, our first response is often frustration. We think about the time we’re losing, the inconvenience we’re experiencing, or everything else we still need to accomplish. Before long, one disruption can influence our attitude toward the entire day.
What if, instead of reacting immediately, we paused long enough to invite God into that moment?
A simple prayer—Lord, help me see what matters right now—can create space between the unexpected event and our response.
That pause allows us to practice discernment.
Not every interruption deserves the same response. Some situations require immediate attention. Others call for patience, flexibility, or compassion. Still others may be distractions that we need to acknowledge without allowing them to consume our energy.
Discernment helps us recognize the difference.
And sometimes, an interruption may create an opportunity we hadn’t anticipated: a conversation that encourages someone, an unexpected moment of rest, or a chance to demonstrate the patience and kindness God has been cultivating within us.
But there is another possibility worth considering.
Sometimes what we experience as an inconvenience may be protecting us from something we cannot see or preparing us for something we have yet to experience.
Think about the times you’ve been delayed leaving home, only to discover later that a serious accident occurred along the route you intended to travel. Or perhaps you’ve missed an important phone call, only to have the conversation later, when the words spoken were exactly what your heart needed to hear.
We cannot know for certain what would have happened if our plans had unfolded differently. But experiences like these remind us that our perspective is limited. We see the inconvenience in front of us, while God sees the whole picture.
Sometimes God is working behind the scenes of a delay. What feels like lost time may become an opportunity for protection, preparation, or unexpected blessing.
That doesn’t mean every interruption is divinely arranged or that every inconvenience carries a hidden spiritual message. Sometimes things simply go wrong. But even then, God can work within our circumstances in ways we may not immediately recognize.
We may never know what an interruption has kept us from, what it has prepared us for, or what God has been working out beyond our view.
And perhaps that is where trust becomes especially important.
Learning to abide means trusting God’s presence not only in the plans we make, but also in the moments we never planned for. It means recognizing that our understanding is limited without allowing that uncertainty to weaken our faith.
We can be disappointed without becoming defeated. We can be inconvenienced without becoming consumed. We can change direction without losing our sense of purpose.
Our peace does not have to depend on everything going according to schedule.
Today, when something unexpected happens, remember that a changed plan does not mean God has abandoned your path. You may need to adjust your expectations, rearrange your priorities, or begin again.
You may eventually understand why things unfolded differently. Or you may never know.
Either way, you can trust that the One who establishes your steps is still walking with you.
Journal Reflection
How can you remain attentive to God when the day does not unfold as you expected? Can you trust Him even when you never discover the reason for a delay?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for remaining constant when my plans change. Help me respond to interruptions with patience, wisdom, and discernment rather than frustration. Remind me that Your vision extends beyond what I can see or understand. Teach me to recognize what requires my attention, what I need to release, and when I simply need to trust You. Keep my heart attentive to Your presence, even when the day takes an unexpected turn. In Jesus’ name, amen.
