It Is Finished
Scripture: John 19:30 NIV
“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
Reflection: The Finality of Love Fulfilled
There are moments in life that feel unfinished—
conversations left hanging, prayers still unanswered,
healing still in process.
We live in a world of almost, not yet, and still becoming.
But on the cross, Jesus spoke something radically different:
“It is finished.”
Not “it has begun.”
Not “it is underway.”
Not even “it is close.”
Finished.
In that single declaration, Jesus completed what humanity never could.
Every prophecy fulfilled.
Every debt paid.
Every barrier between God and man torn down.
Nothing was left undone.
And what makes this moment so powerful is this:
Jesus didn’t say “I am finished.”
He said, “It is finished.”
His life was not taken from Him—
it was offered.
His suffering was not the end—
it was the completion of a mission rooted in love.
The cross was not a tragedy.
It was a transaction.
A holy exchange where sin met mercy,
and mercy had the final word.
The Weight of Those Words
“It is finished” means:
- There is nothing you need to add to be loved by God.
- There is no striving required to earn what Jesus already secured.
- There is no past too broken that His sacrifice did not cover.
We often live as though something is still pending—
as if we must prove, perform, or perfect ourselves to be worthy.
But Jesus already declared the work complete.
So why do we keep trying to finish what He already finished?
A Different Way to Live
If it is truly finished…
then we are invited to live differently.
Not from a place of striving—
but from a place of surrender.
Not trying to earn love—
but responding to it.
Not carrying what has already been nailed to the cross—
but releasing it.
Because the cross doesn’t just change our eternity—
it reshapes our everyday lives.
It asks us:
- What are you still trying to carry that I already completed?
- Where are you striving instead of trusting?
- What would it look like to actually live like the work is done?
The Invitation of the Cross
Jesus’ final words were not just a conclusion—
they were an invitation.
An invitation to rest.
An invitation to believe.
An invitation to walk in the freedom He secured.
“It is finished” means:
You don’t have to keep proving yourself.
You don’t have to keep carrying it.
You don’t have to keep striving.
You are free to receive what has already been given.
Journal Prompts
- Where in my life am I still striving to earn what God has already given?
- What am I holding onto that Jesus has already finished on the cross?
- What would it look like for me to truly live from a place of “it is finished”?
- How can I shift from performance to surrender in this season?
Five-Minute Stillness Practice: Resting in “Finished”
Sit quietly and take a deep breath.
On the inhale, think: “It is…”
On the exhale, release: “…finished.”
Let your shoulders soften.
Let your thoughts slow.
If anything rises up—stress, pressure, guilt—
imagine placing it at the foot of the cross.
Stay here for five minutes.
Not fixing.
Not striving.
Just receiving.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
Thank You that nothing was left undone, nothing incomplete, nothing lacking.
Forgive me for the times I continue striving to earn what You have already given.
Help me to release every burden, every fear, and every false responsibility that You have already carried.
Teach me how to live from a place of surrender, not striving—
from freedom, not fear—
from truth, not performance.
Let the reality of “It is finished” settle deeply into my heart,
so that I may walk in the fullness of what Jesus has already accomplished.
I receive Your grace.
I receive Your love.
I receive Your finished work.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
