Open Hands, Abundant Life

Proverbs 11:24–25 NIV

“One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

There is a paradox in the Kingdom of God that doesn’t always make sense at first glance:
the more we give, the more we gain.
The more we pour out, the more we are filled.

In a world that teaches us to hold tightly—to protect, to preserve, to make sure we have enough—Scripture gently but firmly invites us into a different way of living: open hands instead of closed fists.

The Tension Between Holding and Releasing

If we’re honest, generosity can feel risky.

There’s always that quiet question beneath the surface:
What if I give and there isn’t enough left for me?

But Proverbs reveals something deeper—not just a command to give, but a truth about how God’s Kingdom actually works. Withholding doesn’t create security; it creates scarcity in the soul. But giving—especially when it stretches us—opens the door for God to move in ways we could never orchestrate on our own.

This isn’t transactional. It’s transformational.

The Mystery of Refreshing Others

The second half of this passage is where the beauty deepens:

“Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11:25, NIV)

There is something sacred that happens when we become a source of encouragement, provision, or care for someone else.

When you lift someone’s burden,
when you offer a kind word at just the right moment,
when you give—not just from abundance, but sometimes even from need—
something shifts.

You walk away…different.

Not depleted.
Not empty.
But quietly, deeply refreshed.

Why?

Because in that moment, you are not just giving—you are participating in the very nature of God.

God is always pouring out. Always giving. Always refreshing.

And when we align ourselves with that flow, we step into it.

Open Hands Create Room for God

Closed hands try to control outcomes.

Open hands trust God with them.

When we release what we have—our resources, our time, our encouragement, even our emotional availability—we are making space. Space for God to replenish. Space for Him to surprise us. Space for provision that doesn’t always look like what we gave, but is exactly what we needed.

Sometimes the refreshment comes tangibly.
Sometimes it comes as peace.
Sometimes it comes as strength you didn’t have before.

And sometimes, like you’ve experienced, it comes as a deep, unshakable knowing:
I’m going to be okay either way.

That is abundance.

Living the Paradox

This kind of life doesn’t come from striving—it comes from trust.

It’s choosing, moment by moment, to believe that God is not asking you to give to diminish you, but to position you.

To live open-handed is to say:
God, I trust You more than I trust what I’m holding.

And in that place, generosity stops feeling like loss…
and starts revealing itself as overflow.

Reflection

Where might God be inviting you to open your hands today?

Not out of pressure.
Not out of obligation.
But out of trust.

Who can you refresh—through a word, a gesture, a gift, or simply your presence?

And what might it look like to trust that as you do…
God will meet you there with refreshment of your own?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for showing us a better way—the way of open hands and generous hearts. You are the source of all we have, and we acknowledge that everything we hold first came from You.

Teach us to release what we cling to in fear and to trust You with every part of our lives. Help us to give freely—not out of obligation, but out of love and confidence in Your provision.

Lord, make us vessels of refreshment to others. Let our words, our actions, and our generosity reflect Your heart. And as we pour out, remind us that You are faithful to fill us again—sometimes in ways we expect, and often in ways we do not.

Give us peace in the giving, joy in the serving, and rest in knowing that we are held by You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Leona
