The Chains He Broke

Weekly Reflection

Scripture: Psalm 107:13–16 NIV

“Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.”

There is something powerful about remembering.

Life has a way of drawing our attention toward the struggles we still face, the prayers we are still waiting to see answered, and the battles that seem to linger longer than we expected. Yet Scripture often calls God’s people to pause and remember—not because the past is where we live, but because remembering strengthens our faith for the future.

Psalm 107 tells the story of people who found themselves trapped by circumstances they could not overcome. When they cried out to the Lord, He answered. He brought them out of darkness, shattered the barriers that held them captive, and broke their chains.

That same God has been faithfully working in our lives.

Take a moment today to think about the chains He has already broken. Perhaps He delivered you from fear that once controlled every decision. Maybe He healed wounds that once seemed impossible to overcome. Perhaps He restored relationships, provided when there appeared to be no way forward, or carried you through seasons you never imagined surviving.

The freedom we enjoy today did not happen because we became stronger on our own. It happened because Christ stepped into our bondage with His grace, His power, and His unfailing love.

Remembering God’s faithfulness also gives us confidence for today’s unfinished stories. The God who broke yesterday’s chains has not changed. Whatever still weighs heavily on your heart is not beyond His reach. His power has never diminished, His promises have never failed, and His love has never wavered.

As we conclude this week reflecting on freedom from what once bound us, let gratitude become our testimony. Every broken chain points to a faithful Savior who continues His work in us day by day.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for every chain You have already broken in our lives. Thank You for bringing us out of darkness, walking with us through difficult seasons, and proving Your faithfulness again and again. Help us never forget what You have done. When we face new struggles, remind us that the God who delivered us before is the same God who walks beside us today. Fill our hearts with gratitude, strengthen our faith, and help us live each day in the freedom Christ has secured for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
