Spoken Over in Love

Scripture: Matthew 3:16-17

Before Jesus began His public ministry, He received something every heart longs for: affirmation.

As Jesus came up from the waters of baptism, heaven opened. The Spirit descended like a dove, and the voice of the Father declared:

“This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)

What is remarkable about this moment is its timing.

Jesus had not yet performed miracles. He had not taught crowds, healed the sick, fed thousands, or endured the cross. The public ministry that would change the world had not even begun. Yet the Father spoke words of love, identity, and approval over Him.

The affirmation came before the accomplishment.

We live in a world that often teaches the opposite. We are encouraged to earn approval through performance, achievement, productivity, appearance, status, or success. Many people spend years trying to prove their worth through what they do, hoping it will answer the deeper question of who they are.

But God’s pattern is different.

The Father did not tell Jesus who He was based on what He had done. He declared who Jesus was because of His relationship with Him.

That same truth matters for us.

When our identity is rooted in performance, it rises and falls with every success and failure. When our identity is rooted in the opinions of others, it changes with every compliment and criticism. But when our identity is rooted in God’s declaration, it becomes steady because it rests on something unchanging.

As followers of Christ, we are invited to live from acceptance rather than striving for it. God’s love is not a prize we win. It is a gift we receive.

Many of us carry words that were spoken over us by parents, teachers, friends, employers, or even strangers. Some of those words encouraged us. Others wounded us. Yet above every human voice is the voice of the Father who reminds us whose we are.

The world may define us by our accomplishments. God defines us by His love.

Before we achieve, before we succeed, before we have everything figured out, the Father still speaks words of grace over His children.

And when we learn to receive those words, we stop living for approval and begin living from it.

What voices have most shaped your sense of identity?

Are you measuring your worth by what you accomplish, or by what God has already declared about you?

Spend a few moments today reflecting on the Father’s love and ask Him to help you hear His voice above every other voice competing for your attention.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us before we earn it and for calling us Your own. Help us to root our identity in Your truth rather than in our performance, achievements, or the opinions of others. Teach us to hear Your voice above every competing voice and to live from the security of being loved by You. May Your declaration shape how we see ourselves and how we walk through this day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
