Saturday Selah – A Quiet Courage: Resting in the Faithfulness of God

All week, we have walked alongside Deborah, one of the most remarkable leaders in Scripture. In a time of fear and oppression, Deborah listened for the voice of God, spoke truth with clarity, and led with courage.

She did not step forward because leadership was comfortable.
She stepped forward because God had spoken.

Deborah reminds us that faithful leadership often begins in quiet places — in prayer, in listening, in the willingness to obey before we fully understand what obedience will require.

Scripture tells us:

“Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time. She held court under the Palm of Deborah… and the Israelites went up to her to have their disputes decided.”
Judges 4:4–5 (NIV)

Under the shade of that palm tree, Deborah listened to God and guided the people with wisdom and justice. Her leadership was not loud or self-promoting. It was steady, faithful, and rooted in God.

Throughout this week, we saw several dimensions of Deborah’s faith:

She listened before she spoke.
She acted when obedience required courage.
She encouraged others to step into the roles God had given them.

When Barak hesitated, Deborah did not condemn him. She simply reminded him of what God had already said.

Her courage became a catalyst for others.

And that is often how God works.

Faithful courage rarely stands alone. It awakens courage in others.

During this season of Lent, Deborah’s story invites us to examine our own lives.

Where might God be asking us to listen more closely?

Where might obedience require courage rather than comfort?

And where might acting justly — as the prophet Micah reminds us — mean quietly standing for what is right, even when it would be easier to remain silent?

Deborah’s story reminds us that faithfulness does not always appear dramatic. Often it looks like simple obedience, lived out day by day.

Listening.
Trusting.
Stepping forward when God calls.

And trusting that God will accomplish what He has promised.

A Moment to Reflect

As you enter this quiet Selah moment, consider:

Where might God be inviting me to trust Him more deeply in this season?
Is there a place where obedience requires courage in my life right now?

Sit with the question.
Listen.
Allow the Spirit to gently guide your thoughts.

Closing Prayer

Faithful God,

Thank You for the example of Deborah — a woman who listened to Your voice and trusted You enough to act.

In this season of reflection, help us quiet the noise around us so we can hear You more clearly.

Give us the courage to walk in obedience, even when the path feels uncertain.
Teach us to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with You.

And remind us that when You call us, You also go before us.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Leona
