You Are His Dwelling Place

1 Corinthians 3:16 NIV

“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?”

Yesterday, we reflected on a powerful truth: God is here. His presence is not confined to a church building, a particular moment, or even the times when we can clearly feel Him.

But today’s Scripture brings that truth even closer.

God’s Spirit dwells in us.

We are not simply people who occasionally enter places where God is present. Through His Spirit, we become His dwelling place.

And when we begin to truly understand that, it changes something.

His Presence Comforts Me

There is comfort in knowing that God is not somewhere far away while we try to navigate life on our own.

On uncertain days, He is there.

On difficult days, He is there.

When plans change, He is there.

When we are waiting for an answer and have no idea what comes next, He is there.

And even saying “He is there” does not completely describe it.

His Spirit is within us.

That does not mean uncertainty disappears. It does not mean we will never become afraid, disappointed, frustrated, overwhelmed, or tired.

It means we do not experience those things apart from Him.

As our relationship with God becomes clearer, stronger, and more consistent, our trust in Him can deepen. We begin learning His character. We spend time in His Word. We pray. We remember what He has already brought us through.

And gradually, faith grows.

There is comfort in knowing: Whatever happens today, I am not facing it without God.

His Presence Strengthens Me

God’s presence does not only comfort us. His Spirit strengthens us to live differently.

Sometimes strength looks like enduring something we wish would end.

Sometimes it means doing what is right when doing something else would be easier.

Sometimes strength is getting up and trying again.

And sometimes strength is simply being able to say, “I don’t know what happens next, but I trust God enough to take the next step.”

We do not have to manufacture strength entirely on our own. We can depend upon the God whose Spirit dwells within us.

His Presence Influences Me

The more aware we become of God’s Spirit within us, the more that awareness should influence the way we live.

It can make us pause before we speak.

Pause before we respond.

Pause before we make a decision.

Pause before we act out of anger, fear, pride, frustration, or impulse.

And in that pause, perhaps the question becomes:

What would God want me to do here?

That question matters because our faith is not meant to exist separately from our everyday decisions.

If God’s Spirit dwells within us, His presence should eventually become visible in the way we speak, the way we treat people, the decisions we make, and the way we respond when life does not go our way.

We carry His presence into our homes, workplaces, relationships, conversations, grocery stores, waiting rooms, disagreements, and ordinary moments.

The more our relationship with Him develops, the more we learn to consider Him before we respond.

His Presence Corrects Me

And sometimes, we don’t pause.

Sometimes we say it anyway.

Sometimes we respond badly.

Sometimes we know what we should do and choose something else.

And then comes that feeling we recognize almost immediately:

I shouldn’t have done that.

Conviction is another way God’s presence works within us.

His correction is not evidence that He has kicked us to the curb. It is an opportunity to recognize where our behavior has not aligned with the Spirit of God within us.

We can acknowledge it.

Repent.

Apologize when necessary.

Correct what we can.

And learn from it.

The goal is not perfection. It is becoming increasingly responsive to God.

Over time, perhaps the conviction that once came after we spoke becomes the pause that comes before we speak.

That is growth.

His Presence Reminds Me That I Matter to Him

There is another truth in being God’s dwelling place that we sometimes overlook.

It says something about our value to God.

God created us. He loves us. And He has not abandoned us to navigate this life by ourselves.

Think about the intimacy of what Paul tells us:

You are God’s temple. His Spirit dwells within you.

Our value is not determined by our productivity.

It is not determined by a job title.

It is not determined by our bank account, our appearance, our accomplishments, our failures, or whether other people recognize what we bring to the world.

Our Creator has drawn near.

Not merely beside us.

Within us.

That should change how we see ourselves.

Faith in Practice

We do not earn God’s presence by behaving perfectly, and we do not manufacture His presence through our own effort.

But we can grow in our awareness of His presence and our responsiveness to Him.

Today, periodically remind yourself:

I am God’s dwelling place. His Spirit lives within me.

Then allow that truth to become a pause.

Before you respond—pause.

Before you make the decision—pause.

When uncertainty begins turning into fear—pause.

When frustration starts rising—pause.

When you feel alone—pause.

And remember:

His presence comforts me.
His presence strengthens me.
His presence influences me.
His presence corrects me.
His presence reminds me that I matter to Him.

We are not simply carrying a belief about God into our everyday lives.

We are carrying His presence.

Journal Reflection Question to Carry With You

If I truly lived today aware that God’s Spirit dwells within me, what would change about the way I think, speak, respond, and see myself?

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of Your presence. Thank You that You have not created me and left me to navigate this life alone. Thank You that Your Spirit dwells within me.

Help me become more aware of Your presence. Comfort me when I am uncertain. Strengthen me when I am weak. Influence my decisions and my words. Correct me when my actions do not reflect You, and give me the humility to respond to Your conviction.

When I forget my value, remind me that I belong to You. Help me pause before I speak, before I react, and before I allow fear or frustration to lead me. As my relationship with You grows, deepen my trust and strengthen my faith.

Teach me to live every day aware that I am Your dwelling place. May the way I live reflect the God whose Spirit lives within me.

In Jesus’s name, amen.

Leona
