God Goes Before You
Scripture: Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV
“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you.”
How much of today do we surrender to worrying about tomorrow?
We think about the decisions we haven’t made, the problems we haven’t solved, the appointments we haven’t attended, and the circumstances we cannot yet control. Before we know it, our thoughts have traveled days, weeks, or even months ahead of us.
Meanwhile, today is still here, waiting to be lived.
We can become so consumed with what might happen tomorrow that we overlook the grace God has already provided for today.
Deuteronomy 31:8 offers a beautiful assurance: God goes before us.
Think about what that means.
The future that feels uncertain to us is not unknown to God.
We may not know what awaits us around the next corner, but God is not waiting for us to arrive before He shows up. His presence is not limited to where we stand today. He is already present in the tomorrow we cannot see.
That doesn’t mean every road will be smooth, every circumstance will work out as we imagined, or every difficult season will end when we want it to. God’s promise is not that we will never encounter hardship. His promise is that He will not leave us or forsake us.
And perhaps that is where our perspective needs to change.
When tomorrow begins to overwhelm us, sometimes we need to look backward before we can move forward.
Think about the situations you once worried you wouldn’t survive. The circumstances you couldn’t imagine resolving. The moments when you had no idea what would happen next.
And yet, here you are.
Perhaps the outcome wasn’t what you expected. Perhaps the journey was harder than you anticipated. Maybe you’re still dealing with the consequences of something you experienced. But even in those difficult seasons, can you identify moments when God sustained you, provided for you, or placed someone in your path at just the right time?
Remembering God’s faithfulness in our past doesn’t erase the uncertainty of our future. It reminds us that uncertainty has never prevented God from being faithful.
And something beautiful happens when we begin to remember.
We can return our attention to today.
We begin noticing the little blessings that might otherwise pass us by.
The warmth of the sunshine on our faces when we stop long enough to enjoy it.
An unexpectedly easy commute without the usual traffic or delays.
Finding a convenient parking space when we’re already running behind.
Walking into the grocery store and discovering there’s no line at the checkout.
None of these moments may seem particularly remarkable. We might even call them coincidences or simply the ordinary conveniences of life.
But gratitude teaches us to recognize that not every blessing arrives wrapped in something extraordinary.
Sometimes grace shows up in the smallest moments, and we have to be present enough to notice it.
These little nuggets of goodness, these everyday jewels, are easy to miss when our minds are occupied with problems that haven’t happened yet.
There is wisdom in preparing for tomorrow. We have responsibilities, decisions to make, and circumstances that require our attention. But preparation and worry are not the same thing. Preparation helps us respond to what is within our control. Worry can keep us mentally occupied with what is not.
We can prepare for tomorrow without sacrificing the peace available to us today.
Perhaps trusting God with tomorrow begins with remembering His faithfulness yesterday and recognizing His grace today.
We don’t have to know everything that lies ahead to trust the One who goes before us.
Tomorrow will come with its own circumstances. When it does, we will not arrive there without God.
But today is here now.
And today deserves our presence, our gratitude, and our attention.
Let yesterday remind you of God’s faithfulness. Let tomorrow rest in His hands. And let today be a day you are fully present to receive.
Pause and Reflect
What future concern keeps pulling your attention away from today?
Think back to a time when you faced uncertainty and experienced God’s faithfulness. How might remembering that experience change the way you approach tomorrow?
Then consider the small blessings surrounding you today. What might you notice if you stopped worrying long enough to appreciate them?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the assurance that You go before me. When my thoughts become overwhelmed by tomorrow, remind me of the many yesterdays when Your faithfulness sustained me. Help me remember the circumstances You brought me through and the grace You provided along the way. Open my eyes to the little blessings I might otherwise overlook today. Teach me to appreciate the ordinary moments, to prepare without being consumed by worry, and to trust You with what I cannot control. May gratitude for yesterday and confidence in Your presence tomorrow help me live more fully in the gift of today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Leona
