Learning to Trust Again

Scripture: Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

There are seasons in life when trusting doesn’t come easily.

Disappointments, unanswered prayers, painful losses, and broken relationships can quietly convince us that holding on is safer than letting go. We begin relying on our own plans, our own timing, and our own understanding because it feels less risky than placing everything into God’s hands.

Yet Proverbs reminds us that God’s way has never been about figuring everything out before taking the next step. It has always been about trusting the One who already sees the destination.

One thing I’ve learned is that surrender and trust always walk together. I don’t believe we can fully trust God while still trying to control every outcome. As long as we’re gripping the steering wheel, we’re still placing our confidence in ourselves.

Surrender is the moment we quietly say, “Lord, I don’t know how You’re going to work this out, but I know You do. I’m placing it in Your hands.”

Is that easy? Not always.

Sometimes surrender feels impossible because we’ve carried our burdens for so long that they’ve become familiar. We worry that if we let go, everything will fall apart.

But something remarkable happens when we finally release what we’ve been carrying.

The burden becomes lighter.

It isn’t because every circumstance immediately changes. It’s because God allows us to experience the peace that comes from knowing we were never designed to carry those burdens alone. It’s almost as though a hundred pounds lifts off our shoulders. The situation may still be there, but now we’re walking beside the One who is strong enough to carry it.

That peace is one of God’s first gifts after surrender.

Trust doesn’t require understanding every detail. It simply asks us to believe God’s character more than we believe our fears.

Every small act of obedience becomes another reminder that He is faithful.

Every surrendered step becomes another opportunity to discover that His direction is always better than our own.

Freedom isn’t found in controlling life.

Freedom is found in trusting the God who already holds it.

That kind of freedom produces something the world cannot manufacture: joy.

Not happiness that depends on everything going our way, but the quiet, steady joy that comes from knowing God is already holding what we’re trying to carry. Circumstances may not change overnight, but our hearts do. We can breathe a little deeper, rest a little easier, and walk a little lighter because we know we are no longer carrying life alone.

When surrender leads to trust, trust leads to freedom—and freedom makes room for joy.

Joy is not about everything going perfectly. It’s about knowing that whatever is going on, God’s got it.

Freedom Reflection

What burden are you still holding because you’re afraid to surrender it? What would it look like to place that one burden completely into God’s hands today and trust Him with your next step instead of demanding to see the entire path?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for always being worthy of my trust. Forgive me for the times I’ve relied more on my own understanding than on Your wisdom. Today I choose to surrender what I’ve been carrying and place it into Your hands. Teach me to trust You one step at a time, even when I cannot see the whole journey. Replace my fear with Your peace and remind me that You are faithful in every season. Lead my heart, direct my path, and help me walk in the freedom that comes from completely trusting You. May that freedom produce lasting joy that rests not in my circumstances but in Your unchanging faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Freedom Step

Choose one worry you’ve been carrying. Write it down, pray over it, and intentionally give it to God. When anxiety returns today, gently remind yourself, “I’ve already placed this in God’s hands.”

Freedom Challenge

Every time you’re tempted to figure everything out on your own today, pause and pray:

“Lord, I trust You with this next step.”

Pay attention to how your perspective begins to change as you choose surrender over control, trust over fear, and discover the freedom and joy that only God can give.
