Faith Lived in Community

Scripture: Acts 18:26 NIV
Lenten Focus: Faith grows best in community

Opening Reflection

There was a time when faith felt like something shared around a table.

Not in a sanctuary with rows and microphones, and not on a Zoom behind a computer screen—but in living rooms, at kitchen tables, over meals that were lovingly prepared and freely offered. Someone would open their home. Someone would bring a dish. And together, people would open the Word of God—not as experts, but as seekers.

There was laughter. There were questions. There was growth.

And in those spaces, faith didn’t feel distant—it felt lived.

Those gatherings weren’t separated by age or stage of life. Families sat together. Children listened alongside adults. Wisdom was shared across generations, not reserved for a select few.

And in many ways, what we experienced then reflects what we see in Scripture:

“He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.”
(Acts 18:26, NIV)

Growth didn’t happen in isolation, but through relationships shaped by both knowledge and care.

A Table, A Teacher, A Testimony

There is something significant about the invitation into their home.

In that time, hospitality was more than a gesture—it was a space where lives were shaped. Meals were prepared, tables were set, and environments were created where people could gather, rest, and receive.

But Priscilla’s role did not end with hospitality.

She did not simply prepare the table—she helped shape the teaching that was shared at it.

Alongside Aquila, she took part in explaining the way of God more fully to Apollos. What looks like a simple invitation was, in truth, a powerful expression of discipleship.

In a setting that felt familiar and relational, truth was clarified, understanding was deepened, and faith was strengthened.

What Is Community, Really?

Community is not just where you live—it’s who you are connected to.

It is an intentional gathering of believers committed to growing in Christ together—sharing the fullness of God’s truth, deepening understanding, and strengthening one another in faith, discipleship, and daily walk with God.

This is the kind of community Apollos stepped into.

He was already knowledgeable. Already passionate. But his understanding was incomplete. And it was through relationship—with Priscilla and Aquila—that his faith was expanded and rooted more deeply in truth.

Community, then, is not simply about being around people—it is about people choosing to be shaped, refined, and strengthened together through relationships that continually point one another back to Christ.

Community in Practice

Community is not only something we define—it is something we live.

It can be seen in the spaces where we serve, gather, and grow together. In a food pantry ministry, where hands work side by side. In a choir, where voices come together in harmony. In ministry teams, small groups, and shared moments of service—these are all expressions of community.

Each one is relational. Each one invites us to engage, to contribute, and to grow alongside one another.

And within those shared experiences, something deeper is formed.

We learn from each other.
We are stretched by different perspectives.
We are reminded that we do not have to know everything when we come to the table—that it is in community where we grow and continue growing.

This is where faith is strengthened—not in isolation, but in the humility of being open and the courage of being present.

Faith grows best in community because it is in these shared spaces that we begin to see more clearly, understand more fully, and walk more faithfully—together.

A Safe Place to Grow

True community is not only defined by who is present—but by how we treat one another within it.

A faith-centered community should be a safe place.

A place where people can come as they are—bringing questions, experiences, and even uncertainties—without fear of being judged, dismissed, or diminished.

It is not a space for criticism or correction without care.
Not a place for belittling, debating to win, or speaking over one another.

Instead, it is a space marked by respect.
By listening.
By humility.

A place where each person is given room to share—and just as importantly, room to receive.

Where vulnerability is honored, not exposed.
Where lived experiences are acknowledged, not minimized.
Where no one feels the need to have all the answers in order to belong.

Community is not about fixing one another.

It is about walking together.

And in that walk, we return to Scripture—not as a weapon, but as a guide. Not to dictate or overpower, but to gently lead us into truth, understanding, and growth.

In a healthy, faith-filled community, we are not pressured or pushed—we are supported, encouraged, and reminded of who God is as we grow together.

Community doesn’t demand perfection—it makes room for transformation.

A Gentle Invitation

Today, the spaces may look different—but the invitation is still the same.

Whether around a kitchen table, over coffee, in a ministry, or in a simple moment of shared conversation, there is still room to create what Priscilla once did: a place where faith is nurtured through both care and truth.

The setting may have changed, but the calling remains—to open our lives, to share what we know, and to walk alongside one another as we grow.

Prayer

Lord,
Thank You for reminding us that we were never meant to walk this journey alone.
Teach us to open our hearts and our lives to others, just as Priscilla and Aquila did.
Give us the humility to learn and the courage to walk alongside those You place in our path.
Help us create spaces where truth is shared with love, where vulnerability is honored, and where faith can grow deeply in community.
Let our lives reflect Your design—that we are strengthened, refined, and made more complete together.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Leona
