What Holds Your Heart

There is a quiet honesty in the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:21—an invitation to look beneath the surface of our lives and into the deeper places we don’t always examine.

Not what we say we value.
Not what we hope we value.

But what our hearts are actually following.

Because our hearts don’t drift randomly.
They move with intention—pulled toward what we treasure most.

The Gentle Mirror

We often think of “treasure” as something tangible—money, possessions, security. But treasure is anything we assign weight to… anything we give our attention, affection, and trust.

Our time reveals it.
Our thoughts return to it.
Our energy protects it.

And slowly, almost without noticing, our hearts begin to settle there.

Jesus doesn’t say where your heart is, there your treasure will follow.
He says the opposite.

Your treasure leads.
Your heart follows.

Which means what we consistently invest in—emotionally, mentally, spiritually—will shape the direction of our inner life.

A Moment of Stillness

This isn’t meant to condemn—it’s meant to clarify.

Because sometimes our treasure gets scattered.

Placed in:

  • outcomes we can’t control
  • approval we can’t secure
  • stability that shifts
  • or even responsibilities that quietly become idols

And when our treasure is misplaced, our hearts feel it.

Restlessness.
Anxiety.
Pressure.

Not because we are failing…
but because our hearts were never meant to rest there.

Re-centering the Heart

Jesus invites us back—not through force, but through awareness.

To gently ask:

Where has my treasure been lately?
What has been holding my attention the most?
What have I been depending on for peace?

Because when our treasure is placed in God—
in His presence, His truth, His unchanging nature—

our hearts finally find a place that can hold them.

Steady.
Secure.
Whole.

Closing Reflection

The direction of your heart is not a mystery.

It is revealed in what you treasure.

And today offers a quiet invitation—
not to strive harder,
but to realign gently.

To place your treasure where your heart can truly rest.

Journal Prompts

  • What has been occupying my thoughts most consistently lately?
  • Where have I been looking for peace, security, or validation?
  • What would it look like to intentionally place my treasure in God today?

Five-Minute Stillness Practice

Sit quietly and place your hand over your heart.

Breathe slowly.

Whisper:
“Lord, show me what has been holding my heart.”

Pause.
Listen without judgment.

Then gently pray:
“Help me place my treasure in You again.”

Closing Prayer

Lord, You see beyond what I say and into what I truly treasure.
Gently reveal where my heart has been resting and realign it with You.
Teach me to place my trust, my hope, and my attention in what is eternal.
Let my heart find peace in Your presence, not in passing things.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
