Live So They Can See the Difference

Scripture: Matthew 5:14–16 ESV

Faith was never meant to remain hidden.

Jesus calls His followers the light of the world. Light has a purpose: it helps people see. It brings clarity into darkness. It makes visible what might otherwise remain unnoticed. And according to Jesus, the way we live can point people beyond us and toward God.

That brings us to the heart of Faith in Practice.

Throughout this month, we have considered obedience, faithfulness, courage, forgiveness, waiting, growth, and the fruit our lives produce. But ultimately, practicing our faith is not simply about becoming better versions of ourselves. Our lives are meant to bear witness to the One who is changing us.

They May See God Before They Hear About Him

Not everyone we encounter will walk into a church.

Not everyone will open a Bible.

Not everyone will ask us what we believe.

But they may watch how we respond when we are frustrated.

They may notice whether we treat people with dignity when there is nothing to gain from doing so.

They may remember the grace we extended when we had every opportunity to retaliate.

They may see whether our kindness disappears when life becomes difficult.

Sometimes people encounter the character of God through the character His Spirit is developing in us.

That does not mean we will live perfectly. We won’t.

But there should be evidence that something—or rather, Someone—is making a difference.

The Difference Should Be Visible

If our faith never affects how we speak, how we forgive, how we serve, how we handle disappointment, how we treat people, or how we make decisions, then we have to ask what our faith is producing.

Jesus did not say to manufacture light. He said we are light.

The question is whether we are allowing that light to be seen.

There should be something different about the way we love.

Something different about the way we tell the truth.

Something different about the way we show mercy.

Something different about the way we respond when somebody else is hurting.

Something different about the way we walk through our own difficult seasons.

The difference is not superiority.

It is evidence.

Evidence that God is at work.

Our Lives Bear Witness

The Witness Journal was built around the belief that our lives tell stories of God’s light and truth.

Some of those stories are written with words.

Others are written in how we live.

Every act of obedience becomes part of the witness.

Every time we choose grace instead of revenge, truth instead of convenience, humility instead of pride, generosity instead of selfishness, or faith instead of fear, we are demonstrating that our relationship with God reaches beyond what we say we believe.

Faith becomes visible.

And sometimes the testimony someone needs most will not come from something we say to them.

It will come from something they consistently see in us.

Faith in Practice

As we close this month, perhaps the question is no longer simply:

What do I believe?

Maybe the deeper question is:

What can someone see because I believe it?

Can they encounter God’s love through the way I treat them?

Can they see mercy in the way I forgive?

Can they recognize truth in the way I live with integrity?

Can they see hope in the way I continue trusting God when circumstances are uncertain?

Can they experience light because I refused to contribute more darkness?

We do not live faithfully so people will admire us.

We live faithfully so that what they see in us might point them toward Him.

Reflection

Think about the people who encounter you regularly—at home, at work, in your family, in your community, and even in brief everyday interactions.

What might they learn about God by watching the way you live?

And where might God be inviting you to let His light shine more clearly?

Faith in practice is faith made visible.

So live in such a way that somebody can see the difference.

And when they do, may the glory point beyond you and back to God.
