Leaving the Darkness Behind

Scripture: Colossians 1:13–14 NIV

“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

There are moments in life when we don’t realize how dark things have become until we finally step into the light. We become accustomed to fear, shame, bitterness, anxiety, unhealthy habits, or believing lies about ourselves. What once felt normal is suddenly exposed when Christ opens our eyes.

That is the miracle of salvation.

Paul reminds us that God did not simply improve our circumstances. He rescued us. He reached into the darkness where we could never free ourselves and transferred us into the kingdom of His beloved Son. Salvation is not merely a future promise of heaven—it is a present reality that changes where we live spiritually every single day.

Darkness no longer defines our identity.

The enemy would love nothing more than for us to continue living as though we still belong to the old kingdom. He whispers old accusations. He revives old fears. He reminds us of old failures. But those voices no longer carry authority over those who belong to Christ.

We have been transferred.

That means our citizenship has changed. Our hope has changed. Our purpose has changed. Even when life feels uncertain, we are no longer walking without direction because the Light of Christ now leads our steps.

Leaving the darkness behind is not pretending it never existed. It is choosing not to return to the place where Christ has already delivered us from. Every day we intentionally walk toward His truth instead of old lies, His peace instead of fear, His forgiveness instead of guilt, and His presence instead of isolation.

Transformation is rarely a single dramatic moment. It is often the daily decision to keep walking in the light Christ has already provided.

The darkness may remember your name.

But it no longer owns your life.

Because of Jesus, you have been rescued, redeemed, forgiven, and welcomed into His Kingdom. That is where you belong now.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for rescuing us from the darkness and bringing us into the Kingdom of Your beloved Son. Thank You for redeeming us, forgiving us, and giving us a new identity in Christ. Help us recognize every lie that tries to pull us backward, and give us the courage to continue walking in Your light each day.

When fear whispers, remind us of Your peace. When guilt returns, remind us of Your forgiveness. When doubt arises, remind us that we belong to You. May our lives reflect the transformation You have already begun within us, so others may see the hope found only in Jesus Christ.

Keep our hearts fixed on You as we leave the darkness behind and walk confidently in the freedom You have given us.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Leona

Freedom Step

Identify one thought, habit, fear, or lie that keeps trying to pull you back into spiritual darkness. Surrender it to Christ today, then intentionally replace it with one truth from God’s Word. Every step toward His light is a step away from the life He has already rescued you from.

Freedom Challenge

Before the day ends, pause for five quiet minutes. Ask yourself, “Am I making this decision from fear, or from the freedom Christ has already given me?” Let your answer guide your next step.
