God Is in the Ordinary

Scripture: Colossians 3:17

There are parts of life that naturally feel spiritual.

Prayer. Worship. Church. Bible study. Quiet time with God.

And then there is everything else.

Making breakfast. Driving to work. Answering emails. Washing dishes. Sitting in traffic. Picking up children. Paying bills. Folding clothes. Grocery shopping. Returning a phone call. Cleaning the kitchen for what feels like the hundredth time.

We can easily begin to divide our lives into two categories: the things that belong to God and the things that are simply part of getting through the day.

But Scripture does not give us that division.

Colossians 3:17 tells us that whatever we do—whether in word or deed—we are to do it in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Whatever.

That one word reaches into almost every corner of our lives.

There Is No “Just” in a Life Lived With God

We say things like:

I’m just doing laundry.

I’m just going to work.

I’m just making dinner.

I’m just taking care of the house.

I’m just running errands.

But perhaps there is no just when we belong to God.

The task itself may be ordinary, but the spirit in which we do it can become an act of worship.

Making dinner can become an expression of love.

Doing our work well can become an expression of faithfulness.

Listening patiently to someone can become an expression of compassion.

Cleaning a space can become stewardship.

Driving someone where they need to go can become service.

Even resting can become obedience when we recognize that God never intended us to live as though everything depends upon us.

The ordinary does not have to become spectacular to become sacred.

Sometimes it simply needs to be offered to God.

God Is Already There

We often look for God in extraordinary moments.

We look for the breakthrough.

The miracle.

The answered prayer.

The unmistakable sign.

And certainly, God meets us there.

But He also meets us while the coffee is brewing.

He is with us during the commute.

He is present in the conversation nobody else hears.

He is there while we are doing work that may never receive recognition.

He is with us in the quiet moments when nothing particularly exciting seems to be happening.

We do not have to manufacture a spiritual experience in order to encounter God.

Sometimes faith is simply becoming aware of the God who was already present.

The Ordinary Is Where Most of Life Happens

Most of us will not spend the majority of our lives standing on mountaintops.

We live in kitchens.

Offices.

Cars.

Waiting rooms.

Grocery store aisles.

Living rooms.

School pickup lines.

Bedrooms where we fold laundry while thinking about everything we still need to do.

That means if we only look for God in extraordinary moments, we may overlook Him during most of our lives.

And perhaps part of growing in faith is learning to recognize that the everyday places are not interruptions to our spiritual lives.

They are our spiritual lives.

How we speak when we are frustrated matters.

How we treat people when no one is watching matters.

How we handle routine responsibilities matters.

How we respond when plans change matters.

How we carry ourselves through an ordinary Tuesday matters.

Not because every small task is monumental, but because every part of our lives can reflect the God we serve.

Doing It in His Name

To do something in the name of Jesus does not simply mean attaching His name to it.

It means asking whether the way we are living reflects Him.

Can I have this conversation in His name?

Can I respond to this person in His name?

Can I do this work in His name?

Can I make this decision in His name?

Can I carry this attitude in His name?

That question can change the way we move through an ordinary day.

It brings faith out of Sunday morning and into Tuesday afternoon.

It brings worship beyond the sanctuary and into the workplace.

It reminds us that following Jesus is not simply something we practice during designated spiritual moments.

It is a way of living.

An Ordinary Day Can Still Be a Holy Day

Nothing dramatic has to happen today for God to be at work.

You may simply get up.

Do what needs to be done.

Care for the people God has placed around you.

Handle the responsibilities in front of you.

Pause long enough to notice His presence.

And do the next thing faithfully.

There may be no applause.

There may be no extraordinary revelation.

There may not even be a story worth telling at the end of the day.

But a life consistently offered to God in ordinary moments becomes something extraordinary over time.

So today, do not rush past the routine looking for something more spiritual.

Look for God right where you are.

He is in the ordinary too.

A Question to Carry Today

What ordinary part of your day might look different if you intentionally did it in the name of Jesus?

Prayer

Father, help me recognize Your presence in the ordinary places of my life. Forgive me for the times I have separated my spiritual life from my everyday life, as though You are present in one and absent from the other. Teach me to honor You in my words, my work, my relationships, my responsibilities, and even my rest. Let the way I move through this ordinary day reflect the extraordinary God I serve. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
