God Finishes What He Begins

Scripture Focus:

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”
— Philippians 1:6 (NLT)

We all know what unfinished business feels like in everyday life.

An email draft saved but never sent.
A project started with good intentions but left incomplete.
A difficult conversation we keep postponing.
A goal we once felt passionate about but quietly abandoned.

Unfinished business carries weight. It lingers in the back of our minds. It creates tension. It reminds us that something remains unresolved.

But what happens when we consider unfinished business not just in our natural lives—but in our spiritual lives with God?

Spiritually, unfinished business often looks like:
The areas God has been nudging us to surrender.
The healing we’ve delayed addressing.
The obedience we’ve postponed.
The growth we’ve resisted because it feels uncomfortable.

We recognize that God is working—but we also recognize that the work is not yet complete.

And here is the grace in that realization:
The awareness that something is still unfinished is not evidence of failure.
It is evidence of God’s ongoing involvement in your life.

Philippians 1:6 (NLT) assures us that the God who begins the work is also the God who remains committed to finishing it.

The Difference Between Our Unfinished Work and God’s

In our everyday lives, unfinished business often stays unfinished because of inconsistency, distraction, fear, exhaustion, or lack of discipline. We start with good intentions and lose momentum somewhere along the way.

But God is not like us.

He does not grow weary.
He does not lose interest.
He does not abandon the process when it becomes messy.

When God begins a work in you, He does so with full intention of completion. Your growth is not dependent on your perfection. Your transformation is not sustained by your willpower. Your becoming is not driven by your ability to “get it right.”

It is upheld by God’s faithfulness.

The Hidden Work Still Counts

One of the most difficult parts of spiritual growth is that much of God’s work happens beneath the surface.

We often expect change to be obvious: stronger discipline, better habits, clearer outcomes. But God frequently focuses first on what no one else can see.

He shapes character before behavior.
He deepens humility before influence.
He strengthens trust before visible fruit.

Like roots growing underground before anything appears above the soil, God’s work often develops quietly before it becomes visible.

Just because you can’t see the progress doesn’t mean the work has stopped.

The Middle Is Not the End

Many of us live in the uncomfortable middle space:
No longer who we used to be…
But not yet fully who God is shaping us to become.

That space can feel frustrating. We notice our inconsistencies. We see our blind spots. We become aware of how much further there is to go.

But Philippians 1:6 (NLT) speaks directly to that space.

You are not unfinished because you failed.
You are unfinished because you are still becoming.

Spiritual growth is not about reaching perfection. It is about remaining surrendered to the One who is faithful to continue the work.

The process is not evidence of weakness.
The process is evidence that God is still actively working.

Trusting the Process Requires Surrender

If God is the One who completes the work, our role is not to strive harder—it is to stay surrendered.

To keep showing up.
To keep seeking Him.
To stay open when He convicts.
To obey when it’s uncomfortable.
To trust when progress feels invisible.

Surrender is not passivity.
Surrender is partnership.

It is the daily posture of saying,
“Lord, continue Your work in me—even when I don’t fully understand what You’re doing.”

Reflection & Journal Prompts

You don’t need to answer every question—choose the ones that meet you where you are.

  • What feels like unfinished business in your everyday life right now?
  • Are there areas in your spiritual life where you sense God is still working?
  • Have you ever mistaken “being in process” for failure?
  • Where might God be doing unseen work beneath the surface?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for being the God who finishes what He begins. Thank You that my growth does not depend solely on my strength, but on Your faithfulness. Help me to trust Your process, even when I cannot see the progress. Give me patience in the becoming, humility in the learning, and surrender in the shaping. Continue Your work in me according to Your will and Your purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
