Draw Near: Coming to God Without Pretending

“Move your heart closer and closer to God, and he will come even closer to you.
But make sure you cleanse your life, you sinners, and keep your heart pure and stop doubting.”

James 4:8 TPT

There is a kind of relationship God is inviting us into—
not one built on performance, but on proximity.

James does not command perfection.
He calls us to movement.

Closer… and closer… and closer still.

Drawing Near Is an Invitation, Not a Test

“Draw near to God” is not a demand to arrive polished or spiritually impressive.
It is an invitation to come as you are, right where you are.

God is not asking us to fix ourselves before approaching Him.
He is asking us to approach Him so that He may do the transforming work.

And the promise is clear and steady:
When we draw near to Him, He draws near to us.

Not reluctantly.
Not conditionally.
But relationally.

The Misunderstood Call to Cleansing

This is where many of us struggle.

James speaks of cleansing—of purifying hearts—and too often we interpret that as hiding our mess rather than bringing it into the light.

But cleansing does not begin with pretending.
It begins with honesty.

Honesty about where we are.
Honesty about how we feel.
Honesty about what we’re afraid to say out loud.

True cleansing happens when we stop managing our image before God and start telling Him the truth.

The Burden of Religiosity

For many of us, faith has been shaped by an unspoken expectation:
Come to God only when you are “right.”

So we learn to filter our prayers.
To hide our doubts.
To soften our anger.
To suppress our grief.

And when we inevitably fall short, we internalize the lie that failure equals separation:

“See? I couldn’t do it. I don’t deserve closeness.”

But that is not the God of Scripture.
That is not the heart of the Father.

Relationship Over Perfection

The only perfect one is Jesus—and because of Him, perfection is no longer the requirement.

Relationship is.

God does not withdraw when we struggle.
He does not step back when we confess weakness.
He does not turn away when we come undone.

The distance we often feel is not God leaving—
it is us believing we are not allowed to come close.

Drawing Near Today

Drawing near may look different for each of us today.

It may look like praying without rehearsed words.
It may look like admitting you are tired, confused, or angry.
It may look like saying, “Lord, this is where I really am.”

You do not cleanse yourself to come near.
You come near—and He does the cleansing.

That is the safety of true relationship.
That is the freedom of grace.

A Closing Prayer

God, teach us how to draw near without fear.
Strip away the false belief that we must be perfect to be loved.
Meet us in our honesty, our weakness, and our need.
Thank You that when we move toward You, You never step away.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. Amen! Thank you for this word today. It really resonates with me and the transformation God is working in me. I don’t know what the outcome is going to look like, but I trust God. And, close to him is the only space where I feel safe.
